Split Tips

General information, tips and hints on Split by a local man:

1. Split is the second biggest city in Croatia.
2. Split is located on a peninsula and has the see on the south, north and east.
3. In the North of the city is the Industrial zone. The East side is coverd with a forest, and in  the South are the beaches.
4. Split has its local forest on the East called "Marjan". No building alowed and a godd place for some quietly walk or run with the family or dog.
5. There are two main roads in Split. "Domovinskog Rata" street on the north and "Poljicka cesta" on the south. Both will lead you neer the center of the city, or to the city exit.
6. You can find small shops and a lot of fast food's across Split, so drink and food should't be a problem.
7. Talking bad about Hajduk club can get you in problems if the crowd around you are fans.
8. Using a Bus is more common in Split. Taxi is considered expensive in Split.
9. Free drinkable water taps can be found across Split.Dont drink if there is a "NO DRINKING SIGN".
10. Although throwing garbage in the trash can is a common courtesy, nobody will look at you with disrespect when you leave glass/plastic/ can bottles on the side. Bottles can be exchanged for money in Croatia, and are picked up by poor people.
11. Eating and drinking in the Split center is a lot expensive then the rest of the city. If you are on a strict buget, walk from the center to find a restaurant.
12. Parking in the city center is hard to find and also expensive. There is a lot of free parking places if you can find them.
13. Bublic drinking is tehnically aginst the law, but nobody cares. Having a beer/bottle of votka on a wall/park won't bring you problems.
14. Smoking in closed public areas is forbidden.A lot of bars and cafee bars will let you smoke but ask first.
15. Split shopkeepers and stand sellers don't like to Bargain. The price is mostly fixed, but buying multiple items can get you a discount if you ask.

- Riva(2.)
Is the main and the most famous promenade in the city. It is sad that all Split citizens got to Riva in the morning and dring coffe there and stay until lunch...Of course that is crazy but if the day is good finding a seat on Riva is hard.

- Prokurative(3.)
If there is a cultural thing going on in the open in Split, it's here.A Venice style square made in the latter half of 19. century.

- Grgur Ninski Statue(4.)
Google map: 43.509482,16.440866
Close your eyes and hold his golden toe. Make a wish and it will come true. Well im not a millionare yet, so maybe it's not true, but try, maybe you'll have more luck.

Probably the most popular Dalmatian painter. And there are real pictures there, none of those modern 2 colour shit you see these days.

-Green Market (8.)
"Pazar". Place to buy your souvenirs and other stuff you need.Just east of the Palace walls. It can be gouped in sections, the food section, the souveniers section and the clothes section.

-Croatian National Theatre (9.)

Google map: 43.50974,16.440144

Old things. Some date back to the 7th century. Most from 9th to 12th century. You Want Croatian history? You go here.

Split nightlife

OK, you came to Split and want a good time. It's easy to find the name of the club but is it worth coming there? Whats interesting and whats a waste of time? I'll give my personal opinion for some club you could give a try.
Split night life isn't much. You probably won't party hard if you're not in the maximum party mood. Split people are layed back and wont rock the dance floor, and they generaly like geting out late. Trying to have a good time before 12:00PM is hard.
The hot spots in Split that you will probably get directed to are:
Vanilla
Hemingway
Hedonist
Imperium
Bačvice
Tropico
ST Riva
F caffe
O'Hara

There are a lot more little cafe bars that get active on summer but these are probably the most visited ones by locals or tourists.

My first pick for a young toursit group wanting to get down is Bacvice beach. It has a a little complex building with lots of little clubs in it. The main ones are Bacvice club (duuuh..) and Tropico club.  Bacvice has an open terrace and a coctail bar. Its mostly populated by tourists. Electro, house, regular party stuff by the DJ.Its active every night during the summer. Tropico probably gets more locals. And its closed(although when it opens all the windows, its like in the open.

If you are going out early you should visit the town center and the main Split promenade Riva.
There you will find ST Riva and F caffe that can have the habit of turning the speakers up a little. Coctail bars can be found and a good warm up place. On the down side they are running until 11-12 PM.

If you go to the car ferry you will probably see Imperium. It is a new place in Split so i really don't know how it will be during the summer but you can give it a shot if you are walking to Bacvice.
If you are going further East you will walk by O'Hara. 2 level club that mostly plays Rock and Trash music. Near them is Hedonist. Its more of a classy place to go to,and 95% locals.

The two places you will probably need to take a taxi to is vanila and Hemingway. Vanilla is probably the most active and known nightlife in Split  at the moment. It is also active in the summer. A lot of locals there due to the fact that it's not really in walking distance from the center. Also a place where the crowd doesnt sow up until 1AM minimum.
During the rest of the year Hemingwey is more of a young people place. So i really don't know what will they do doring the summer. I had some good times here, but not recently.YOu can give it a visit if you are coming to Vanilla(its probably 300 m from it)

As you can see, most clubs are grouped. You can have fun in the center of the city but it will last until 11-12 PM.Taxi i Split is expensive(at least for locals). It will cost you about 50 kn in one direction minimum. You won't get cheaper if you bargin with the driver( you will probably get a 200kn price if you ask, so be sure he turns on the taximeter)
I made a little map for you with all the clubs in it so you know what im talking about:

You can check some photos frome these places at http://www.nightlife.hr/galerije/.

Beaches in Split

Edited: 10.08.2016
One of the things tourists want in Split is to get in the sea. As the rest of the Croatian coast, Split has awesome beaches. They are not fancy, and elite types, they are simple and relativly small, and every beach in Split can have a Blue flag( meaning, the water is clear and good)
Where are the beches? I got a map from Google, and pin pointed the beaches... All the beaches(Last picture)
And some personal information about every one. These are the beaches names:
- Prva voda
- Bene
- Kasjuni
- Kastelet/Obojeno
- Bacvice
- Ovcice
- Firule
- Trstenik
- Znjan
- Duilovo

- Prva voda:
The only beach facing north. It's in the Marjan forest. It's small, and not very popular in Split. But if you want shade this is one of the best places. It has a free shower. You won't find  a lot of young girls in bikinies here,it's more of a senior beach: Peacfull. No caffe bars around so bring snacks and drinks(although there is free water on the shower ).Its made of gravel mostly. You can get there by foot (Šetalište Marina Tartaglie street) or by car (Šetalište Bene street) (closest parking spot is cca 20 m with cca.100 parking spots, but can be full at the afternoon).

- Bene:
The only Split beach facing west. Like the first one its in the Marjan forest and with lot of shades. You have showers, a caffe bar and even some recreational facilities like a tennis court and fussball ground, as well as some children playground in the back. It has a concrete coast line for those who don't like rocks, and there is sand in the water... mostly. Free Shower included.Mostly older or family people with children. Not a lot of chicks. You can get there by foot following the north Marjan road (Šetalište Marina Tartaglie street)  or by car/autobus that goes on the south road.

- Kasjuni:
South side of Marjan forest.
Gravel makes the whole beach. No shades so bring some. You need to pay for the shower.
Two caffe bars. Mixed people coverage. Mostly for people with cars due to the fact that the beach is far from the populated areas of Split.

-Kastelet or Obojeno:
Kastelet for older peeps, and Obojeno for young. One of the popular beaches by the locals and especially young people..
Located south of Marjan forest. Its made of two parts. Free showers, two caffe bars, and a lot of people. Mostly young people. It has a big parking lot so if with car no problems.Gravel type of beach. Get your flirting game on, because you will need it if you want that hot girl or guy beside you to put sun lotion on you, and believe me, you will need it if you don't wan't to go home red.

-Bacvice:
The famous sand beach of Split.Located east of the ferry and train station. A lot of caffe bars, snack bars, restaurants and has free showers. The place where the famous Split game PICIGIN is heavily played.(learn:http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picigin),due to the fact that the water is shallow and sandy.
It has a sandy side and a concrete side. Not good if you enjoy swimming, but good for kids. A lot of kids there.

-Ovcice:
Gravel type beach. Just east of Bacvice. Small and not popular with young people. Mostly older people on it. Shower and one caffe bar on it with and extended cocktail bar making it possible to drink cocktails on the beach it self.Car parking above but you need to be lucky.

-Firule:
The second sand beach of Split. Its like a small version of Bacvice. The shallow water makes it very good for children. Mostly old people or people with children. Free shower and a caffe bar on it,also a small store. The main Split tennis courts are just above. Some shades. Car parking can be a problem, due to the fact that the only one near is shared with beaches Ovcice and Bacvice.

-Trstenik:
Gravel type beach. No shades. Relatively big. Mixed people count. But i would say its mostly adults. A typical beach, not a lot of rush on it. Free Shower.Parking can be found but not near the beach.

-Znjan:
Probably the most popular beach for young people. It's the biggest beach in Split, separated in couple of parts. Biggest problem is that it has almost no shade. So probability of sun burn while flirting with local girls is 200%. There is a parking lot behind it and parking is no problem.
A lot of beach bars, caffe bars, snack stands, recreational facilities, skate park, kids playground.
Shower are free. A lot of good looking guys and girls. Gravel type all the way.

-Duilovo
Probably the most non popular beach in Split. Its the last Split beach, under a big slope, that can be terrifying to look especially to lay down beneath it. Its gravel and concrete made. Has some shade. Free shower. Also there is a dog beach on it so if you are with your animal pet, this is the only legal beach for him to get some sea time.Mostly older people and kids.

So where to go? I will leave that to you.
But its simple, Young people choose beaches like Obojeno,Znjan... Family peeps go on Bacvice, Firule, Seniors may choose Bene,Prva Voda, Ovcice. Adults probably prefer beaches like Kasjuni, Trstenik...
Your call... If you can't decide why not take a walk. You can get from Bacvice all the way to Znjan in probably 30 minutes of normal walk, and with that you will pass 5 beaches.. remember Split is still a small city.
ENJOY
